Yuri Bukhan, founder of Second Engine Partners

Partnerships that move the number, built by someone who understands the product, the deal, and the business.

I’m Yuri, founder of Second Engine Partners.

Most companies have one growth engine: direct sales. The best ones build a second: an ecosystem of cloud providers, technology partners, and channels that sources pipeline, shortens sales cycles, and opens markets direct sales can’t reach alone. I’ve spent my career building that second engine, from the first partner agreement to programs that drive a majority of company revenue.

An engineer’s understanding of the ecosystem

I studied Computer Science at Stanford, and I approach partnerships the way an engineer approaches a system: what connects to what, where the value flows, and what breaks under load.

That foundation matters more than most people realize. Great partnerships are not logo swaps. They depend on understanding how products integrate, how data moves between platforms, and why a joint solution is worth more to the customer than either product alone. I can sit with a partner’s engineering team and talk architecture, then sit with their sales leadership and talk quota, in the same afternoon.

A cross-functional operator, not just a deal-maker

Before leading BD, I worked across Product, Sales Engineering, and Sales. Each role shaped how I build partnerships today:

  • Product taught me to see partnerships as roadmap decisions. The right integration can be a feature, a moat, or a new market.

  • Sales Engineering taught me what makes a joint solution actually work in front of a customer, and what makes one fall apart in a proof of concept.

  • Sales taught me that a partnership only matters if it shows up in the pipeline. If sellers on both sides can’t explain why to bring the partner in, the program doesn’t exist.

The result is a BD leader who understands the whole business: how partnerships affect product strategy, GTM motion, unit economics, and the board-level revenue story.

From zero to one, and from one to scale

I’ve done both, which is rarer than it sounds. Building a program from nothing and scaling one into a revenue engine require different skills, and most companies need both at different moments.

Building from zero

  • Launched the first partner program at Neo4j.

  • Built Cloudera Connect from zero to 550+ software partners over 4.5 years. Partners influenced 65% of revenue, and I represented business development in Cloudera’s S-1.

Scaling to revenue

  • At Trifacta, led BD to source 50% of the company pipeline. Renegotiated a strategic partnership improving revenue terms 50x and growing it to 30% of company revenue. Closed an eight-figure, three-year agreement with leading software company.

  • At Segment, rebuilt the team and grew partner-sourced revenue from under 5% to 20%, with 35% partner-influenced. Defined multi-partner solutions that cut sales cycles by 60%.

  • At Sentry, negotiated distribution deals with a leading gaming console provider and scaling developer platform.

  • At GrowthLoop, partnerships drove 75% of total pipeline through co-sell with Google Cloud, Snowflake, and Databricks.
